AWS Backup now supports cross-account backup, enabling AWS customers to securely copy backups across accounts within their AWS Organizations.

Customers can copy backups from the backup vault of the source account to the backup vaults of destination accounts, either on-demand or as part of a scheduled backup plan. These copies provide customers an additional layer of protection should the source account experience disruption from accidental or malicious deletion, disaster, or ransomware. Customers no longer need to manage multiple custom scripts or expensive third-party solutions. Customers can easily restore from the destination account or, alternatively, from a third account.

Moreover, AWS Backup empowers customers to leverage cross-account backup and the previously launched cross-region backup simultaneously, copying backups to a different account in a different region enabling customers to meet their security, compliance, and business continuity requirements.

Cross-account backup leverages AWS Organizations to define the source and destination accounts. Customers may use their AWS Organizations management account to designate certain accounts as destination accounts. This helps customers ensure that backups are copied only to trusted accounts in the organization, and adds yet another layer of protection from unauthorized public exposure.

Cross-account backup continues AWS Backup's mission of helping customers further automate their data protection mechanisms.

Note: Cross-account backup is currently not supported for HAQM DynamoDB tables or HAQM FSx file systems.
