A 2023 survey of providers across the United States (U.S.) shows remote patient monitoring adoption surge 300% between 2020 and 2022. Clinicians face the challenge of securely managing and analyzing patient data from diverse medical sensors and remote monitoring devices. Analog biometric analysis relies on skilled clinicians, leading to variations in interpretation. In this blog, you will learn how Vivalink’s Biometrics Data Platform (VBDP) on HAQM Web Services (AWS) is transforming patient care through secure, scalable, and intelligent biometric data management.

Healthcare biometric challenges

Healthcare organizations are adopting biometric technologies to address issues with patient safety, data security, and operational efficiency. The healthcare biometric market will reach $24.9 billion by 2031, with a 17.4% compound annual growth rate. However, challenges such as privacy concerns, high initial costs, and legal compliance pose barriers to the growth and adoption as it affects both healthcare providers and patients. Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) regulations classify biometric data as protected health information, requiring strict privacy and security measures.

Despite these challenges, biometric systems reduce medical errors, minimize fraud, and improve emergency response capabilities. They offer a touchless authentication that enhances both security and user experience, important in post-pandemic healthcare environments. As healthcare continues to evolve, biometric identification improves patient care through more accurate, secure, and efficient methods. Based on a 2023 survey of providers across the U.S, 77% of providers predict remote patient monitoring (RPM) based care will outpace traditional in-patient hospital care within five years.

Overview of Vivalink

Vivalink is an AWS ISV partner, providing digital healthcare solutions, specializing in medical-grade biometric sensors, algorithms, and a secure data platform. Vivalink integrates vitals data into clinical workflows, improving patient outcomes, and driving advancements in areas such as hybrid clinical trials, hospital-at-home, and ambulatory cardiac monitoring.

The VBDP meets crucial healthcare needs for remote patient monitoring and clinical trials. It ensures data security and privacy, adhering to industry standards such as HIPAA and General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). The platform’s modular architecture enables integration with various biometric sensors, facilitating scalable data exchange to meet growing remote monitoring demands. Additionally, VBDP’s analytics capabilities generate actionable clinical insights, empowering healthcare providers to make informed decisions and deliver personalized care.

Vivalink technology and architecture

VBDP delivers a three-tier solution that processes millions of biometric data points daily:

  • Sensors: Medical-grade biometric sensors capture critical patient data with millisecond precision. These physiological data includes electrocardiogram (ECG), body temperature, heart rate, respiratory rate, blood pressure, and blood glucose.
  • Edge Computing: Mobile clients serve as the edge computing layer, ensures data integrity and real-time processing at the point of care. They communicate with the biometric sensors via low-energy Bluetooth (BLE) protocol and deliver to AWS cloud using RESTful services over HTTPS. This provides a transparent, modern interface for patients and clinicians to access real-time data, monitor vital signs, and receive alerts.
  • Cloud: The cloud tier uses microservices built on AWS serverless infrastructure, enabling cost-effective scaling of operations while maintaining secure data handling. This architecture allows healthcare organizations to efficiently manage biometric data – from ingestion to analysis – while only paying for the resources they use.

VBDP uses vCloud Core and vCloud Analytics, built on the cloud infrastructure, to transform raw biometric data into actionable healthcare insights. Figure 1 architecture diagram shows how these components work together to process and analyze patient data.

vCloud Core is a data processing pipeline that orchestrates real-time ingestion and processing of continuous biometric data streams. HAQM API Gateway serves as the secure entry point for all incoming data, ensuring proper authentication and routing. HAQM Kinesis Data Streams ensures reliable data capture from thousands of medical devices while providing near real-time data access for health analytics. For long-term storage and compliance, all incoming data is also archived in HAQM S3, allowing for historical analysis and auditing.

vCloud Analytics uses HAQM Kinesis Data Streams and HAQM Kinesis Data Analytics to analyze the vitals data. It transforms raw biometric data into clinical intelligence, using AI algorithms to detect health anomalies and generate actionable insights. Clinicians access customizable dashboards showing real-time patient status, pattern analysis, and predictive alerts. By simultaneously processing multiple vital signs, it detects adverse events and facilitates proactive patient care interventions.

Integrating with various sensors and healthcare systems, this modular architecture incorporates vital data into clinical workflows, improving personalized care and patient outcomes.

Customer usage and medical devices

VBDP integrates with different types of medical devices to provide a scalable data management solution. The key medical devices and sensors integrated with the platform include:

  • Wearable ECG monitors: Connects to medical-grade ECG/EKG sensors, allowing continuous cardiac monitoring, heart rate variability, and arrhythmia detection. This allows real-time cardiac metrics monitoring across ambulatory care, decentralized clinical trials, and hospital at home programs.
  • Continuous Glucose Monitoring (CGM) sensors: Manages glucose data streams from CGM devices, storing sensor data in the cloud for customer access through both query APIs and archived files. The system generates AGP (Ambulatory Glucose Profile) compliant visualizations for physicians, aiding diabetes management programs.
  • Temperature and Multi-Vital Sensors: Integrates with clinical-grade temperature sensors, blood pressure monitors, SpO2 sensors, and activity trackers. This delivers concurrent tracking of multiple vital signs for both in-facility care and remote patient monitoring.

Customer Impact: Atrial Fibrillation Monitoring

Vivalink addresses one of healthcare’s most pressing cardiac monitoring challenges – Atrial Fibrillation (AFib) detection and management. During a 3,000 patient AFib study, the VBDP and continuous ECG monitor captured cardiac rhythms remotely, sending data to an arrhythmia detection algorithm for analysis and reporting. The medical-grade wearable sensors delivered 24/7 ECG monitoring, detecting AFib episodes that intermittent monitoring misses. The solution showed medical-grade accuracy in AFib detection, providing clinicians with reliable data for diagnosis and treatment decisions. Additionally, Vivalink’s ECG sensor’s comfortable, reusable design improved patient adherence to long-term monitoring protocols.

“The capabilities of the Vivalink ECG sensor will enable us to capture a larger continuous dataset to identify imaging, serum and digital biomarkers of AF risk and progression in the study.”
Jeffrey Olgin, Chief of Cardiology and Principal Investigator at UCSF

Vivalink patient monitoring and adherence portal

VBDP’s web portal allows clinicians to simultaneously monitor multiple patients in real-time or retrospectively. Its features include device management, protocol monitoring, dashboards for notifications and compliance, ECG analysis results, multi-vital sign displays, reporting, and analytics integration. With configurable alerts and event detection algorithms, clinicians optimize the care process. It offers patient adherence reports to monitor proper usage of RPM technologies and uninterrupted data collection. Below is the device configuration interface, which enables healthcare providers to manage and monitor connected medical devices:

Figure 4 shows the multi-vital sign view that displays live data for multiple patients, as well as an ECG waveform view. It provides notification when vital signs go above/below set thresholds, with visual cues and audio alerts for the user. This differentiation offers the ability to monitor multiple patients through a unified view. The observing clinician can monitor, compare trends, and analyze behaviors across patients under varying clinical settings.
