AWS Week in Review – February 22, 2016

Let’s take a quick look at what happened in AWS-land last week:

Monday February 22	We announced an HAQM RDS Update, with Support for MySQL 5.7. We announced that the AWS Mobile SDK for Android Now Supports AWS IoT. We announced the AWS Pop-Up Loft in Tel Aviv. CloudCheckr listed 5 Common AWS Cost Issues: What to Look for and How You Can Quickly Fix Them. We announced On-Demand Pipeline Execution in AWS Data Pipeline. The AWS Mobile Development Blog announced that Unity v3 Support in the AWS SDK for .NET is out of Preview. N2WS discussed your EBS Volume Encryption Options. Spotinst (clustering and predictive purchasing) Now Supports On-Premises Installation. We Kanban discussed HAQM API Gateway Custom Authorization. Powerup Cloud presented AWS Directory Services – Simple AD Step by Step. Steligent talked about Advanced Solutions with CFNDSL and CloudFormation. Cloud Technology Partners advised How to Bet on AWS Reserved Instances – And Win. Sirqul lets you Launch an Enterprise IoT Application Stack on AWS Marketplace in a Matter of Minutes.
Tuesday February 23	We announced that Route 53 Now Supports SNI for HTTPS Health Checks. The AWS Partner Network Blog published an HAQM Aurora Digest, with APN Partner Highlights. The AWS Security Blog published Part of of the Automating HIPAA Compliance Series: How to Use AWS Config to Help with Required HIPAA Audit Controls. The AWS Java Blog published Part 2 of a series on Event-Driven Architecture using Scala, Docker, HAQM Kinesis Firehose, and the AWS SDK for Java. We updated the AWS SDK for Ruby, AWS CLI, AWS SDK for JavaScript, AWS SDK for Java, and the AWS SDK for Go. Sungard talked about the AWS Lambda Invasion in Big Data. 2nd Watch talked about Migrating to AWS NAT Gateway. Cloud Academy discussed Big Data: HAQM EMR, Apache Spark, and Apache Zeppelin. Gorillastack showed you how to Eliminate Server Overhead With This Open Source Lambda Hack. ParkMyCloud shared a case study that showed How to Save $55K on EC2 with ParkMyCloud.
Wednesday February 24	We announced that AWS Marketplace added SharePoint Enterprise. We announced a Simplified User Experience for Auto Scaling Lifecycle Hooks. We announced that HAQM Kinesis Streams is Now Available in the South America (Brazil) Region. The AWS Security Blog showed you How to Use AWS WAF to Block IP Addresses that Generate Bad Requests. The HAQM GameDev Blog announced a New, More Compact, Lumberyard Install. The AWS Government, Education, & Nonprofits Blog showed how NREL and AWS Bring Energy Data to Analysts and Researchers. Cloud Academy continued their discussion of Centralized Log Management with AWS CloudWatch. Gathering Clouds wondered How Secure is AWS Cloud for Retailers and eCommerce? 8k Miles showed you how to Control the Launch of Specific EC2 Instances After Hours to Save Costs.
Thursday February 25	We announced the the HAQM WorkSpaces Application Manager is Now Available in the Asia Pacific (Sydney) and Asia Pacific (Singapore) Regions. We announced that HAQM Redshift is Now Available in the US West (San Francisco) Region. I shared three customer stories: Vodafone DreamLab – Accelerating Cancer Research, How Tokyu Hands Architected a Cost-Effective Shopping System with HAQM DynamoDB, and How The Healthcare of Tomorrow is Being Delivered Today. The AWS Java Blog talked about Deploying Java Applications on Elastic Beanstalk from Maven. We updated the AWS SDK for Ruby, AWS SDK for JavaScript, AWS SDK for Go, and the AWS SDK for Java. Cloud Academy began a review of HAQM Cloudsearch: Search as a Service. Flux7 shared some Ansible Playbooks for Provisioning and Managing HAQM Web Services. Tekhead shared some AWS Tips and Gotchas. BillGist emails you simple overviews of your AWS costs.
Friday February 26	We announced AWS CloudFormation support for VPC NAT Gateway, EC2 Container Registry, and More. The HAQM Mobile App Distribution Blog announced a New Alexa Skills Kit (ASK) Feature – Extensible Built-In Types. The AWS Big Data Blog showed you how to Optimize Spark-Streaming to Efficiently Process HAQM Kinesis Streams. The AWS Compute Blog showed you how to Use HAQM API Gateway as a Proxy for DynamoDB. The AWS Government, Education, & Nonprofits Blog talked about how the IoT Revolution Drives Agencies to Big Data Analytics in the Cloud. We updated the AWS SDK for Android and the AWS CLI. Botmetric shared some AWS Cloud Cost Best Practices to Achieve Efficiency. TriNimbus shared a First Hand Account of Prepping for the AWS Certification. ParkMyCloud showed How to Save Money with AWS Spot Instances.
Saturday February 27	The HAQM Simple Email Service Blog published a Welcome to Mandrill Customers!
Sunday February 28	Spotinst showed you how to Create Cost-Efficient Auto Scaling on AWS using Spotinst and Terraform.

Claudia.js helps to deploy Node.js microservices to AWS easily.
condensation helps to package, reuse, and share particles for CloudFormation projects.
enhanced-snapshots manages backups for servers running on AWS.
aws-services are microservices that provide various conveniences when managing AWS.
gradle-aws-apigateway-plugin is a Gradle plugin that provides automated management of API Gateway resources.
aws-bootstrap launches a new, minimum VPC on AWS.
aws-wrapper is a set of scripts for common interactions with AWS.
Lambda-AWS-New-AD-User-Email sends an email to new Active Directory users.
FSharp.DynamoDB is an F# wrapper API for DynamoDB.

New Customer Success Stories

The Cleveland Clinic -The Cleveland Clinic runs its Healthy Brains Initiative on AWS and can protect confidential patient data with the built-in security and compliance features of the AWS cloud.
National Instruments -National Instruments (NI) reduced testing costs by more than $1 million and shaved months off its software development process by using AWS.
Prezi – Using HAQM Redshift and other AWS data services, Prezi has enabled its employees to quickly obtain data to improve the company’s service offerings and help executives identify new revenue opportunities
Vinomofo – By launching its website on AWS, Vinomofo was able scale seamlessly to support increases in visitor numbers from 100 during off-peak periods to 12,000 during peak events.
