AWS HealthLake launches in the EU: Unlocking the future of interoperability and FHIR-based innovation
Today, we’re excited to announce the expansion of AWS HealthLake to the EU (Dublin) Region, marking a significant milestone in our commitment to supporting healthcare organizations across the European Union (EU). This expansion enables European healthcare providers, insurers, health technology, and life sciences companies to store, transform, and analyze their health data in Fast Healthcare Interoperable Resources (FHIR) standards while maintaining data residency within the EU. Customers and partners like Adapcare, Vhi Healthcare, and HippocrAItes are building interoperable solutions using AWS HealthLake to help improve healthcare services and patient outcomes. Following the existing availability of AWS HealthImaging and AWS HealthOmics in the EU region, AWS HealthLake now joins these purpose-built services in helping our European healthcare and life sciences customers keep their multi-modal health, omics, and clinical data standardized, out of silos, and secure.
What is AWS HealthLake?
AWS HealthLake is a fully managed service that helps healthcare organizations store, transform, and analyze health data at scale. Using FHIR-based APIs, HealthLake provides a centralized repository for traditionally fragmented healthcare data. The service enables healthcare providers, Electronic Health Record (EHR) systems, and health insurance organizations to consolidate their disparate healthcare data into a FHIR-based repository, making it easier to power advanced analytics, artificial intelligence and machine learning (AI/ML) applications, and interactive solutions through ready-to-use FHIR APIs and integrated AI and natural language processing (NLP) capabilities.
Healthcare organizations across the industry are using AWS HealthLake for various critical use cases.
Healthcare providers and EHRs use AWS HealthLake to:
- Unify clinical data into a normalized common data model (FHIR-based) and repository for comprehensive patient views
- Modernize EHRs to support interoperable clinical and administrative data exchange
- Identify and address care gaps to enhance patient outcomes
- Use generative AI for efficient patient chart summarization and progress note generation
Health insurers use AWS HealthLake to:
- Develop a comprehensive view of the patient and streamline analytics for risk stratification and care management
- Simplify quality measurement processes and reporting
- Extract social determinants of health (SDOH) and member data using NLP
With the addition of the EU (Dublin) Region, AWS HealthLake is now available in multiple strategic locations including US East (N. Virginia), US East (Ohio), US West (Oregon), Asia Pacific (Mumbai), Europe West (London), and Asia Pacific (Sydney) Regions. This broader geographical presence means that healthcare organizations can access these powerful capabilities while meeting their regional compliance and data residency requirements.
How our customers and partners use AWS HealthLake
Vhi Healthcare, the largest health insurance company in Ireland, has been building a clinical data platform using AWS HealthLake to enhance member experience and their well-being.
“At Vhi, our goal is to support the health and well-being of our members at every step of their journey. With AWS HealthLake, we’re exploring how we could build a clinical data platform to potentially unify health information and deliver more personalized, proactive care experiences,” said Ronan Fitzpatrick, Group CTO at Vhi. “Through a proof of concept, we’re also investigating how FHIR-enabled data could transform member engagement—making care more connected, responsive, and effective.”
Adapcare builds EHRs and scheduling and shift management systems for 50,000 health professionals across the Netherlands. It has been developing solutions using AWS HealthLake to enhance services for healthcare and social care providers throughout the country.
Ramon Postulart, CTO at Adapcare, commented: “As CTO of Adapcare, I’m excited about AWS HealthLake launch in EU Region. AWS HealthLake is a key AWS healthcare service helping us modernize interoperability across the 70+ care organizations and 60,000 health professionals we support in the Netherlands. By moving to this service, we’re unlocking richer, standardized health data and leveraging the HealthLake fully managed capabilities to build smarter, AI-powered tools for care planning and coordination. This is a crucial step in scaling innovation while meeting the strict compliance needs of European healthcare.”
HippocrAItes is a Finland-based healthcare technology company, which has built its Hippo Health Platform using AWS HealthLake. This innovative solution benefits individuals, medical professionals, and service providers by establishing a digital repository of personal health data and facilitating a tailored and personalized approach to healthcare in Finland and the Netherlands.
“At HippocrAItes, we envision a future where personal health data is seamlessly integrated, securely managed, and meaningfully used to support every individual’s wellbeing,” said Pekka Honkanen, chairman of the board at HippocrAItes. “By building the Hippo Health Platform on AWS HealthLake, we’re creating a national and cross-border infrastructure that transforms fragmented health records into standardized, FHIR-based datasets. This enables scalable innovation—from AI-assisted diagnostics to preventive care pathways—bringing Finland and the Netherlands closer to truly personalized, data-driven healthcare.
Our commitment to secure and scalable cloud infrastructure
The AWS HealthLake launch into the EU (Dublin) Region demonstrates our ongoing commitment to European healthcare organizations and aligns with our broader AWS for the European Health Data Space (EHDS) initiative. AWS HealthLake service and features are key enablers for the building applications to empower individuals to access, control, and share their electronic health data across borders for healthcare delivery, enable the secure and trustworthy reuse of health data for research, innovation, policy-making, and regulatory activities, and help EHRs to modernize and support both primary and secondary use for health data.
Data sovereignty is a cornerstone of our support for our EU customers. By offering AWS HealthLake in the Dublin Region, we make sure that healthcare organizations can maintain their data within EU borders while still benefiting from advanced cloud capabilities. This approach addresses crucial requirements for data residency, compliance with EU data protection regulations, and local data processing needs.
This expansion represents another significant step in our mission to make healthcare data more accessible, interoperable, and secure while respecting regional data sovereignty requirements. As healthcare organizations continue their digital transformation journey, AWS HealthLake in the EU (Dublin) Region provides a foundation for interoperability and standardization to accelerate innovation in healthcare delivery and research.
