George Mason University (Mason) is on a mission to build a more student centric and technologically advanced education institution. Leveraging the breadth and depth of services across HAQM, including technical solutions from HAQM Web Services (AWS), the university will embark on a multi-year collaborative effort. Mason will drive new innovations to better serve students, work with the defense community, advance its commitment to a more sustainable campus environment, and introduce new educational programs in data center engineering.

At re:Invent 2022, AWS announced the winners of this year’s AWS IMAGINE Grant. Winners receive not only unrestricted funding, but also access to training and expert technical guidance. Although they represent diverse mission areas, each organization is committed to innovating with the cloud, using data to fuel their missions, and scaling access to vital services through cloud-enabled, digital tools. AWS re:Invent returns to Las Vegas, Nevada for 2022, from November 28 through December 2. The annual event helps customers and partners reimagine what’s possible by learning what’s new with AWS, growing their knowledge, and getting inspired by the global cloud community. How can public sector attendees prepare for re:Invent and make the most of their experience?

The backbone of the internet is crisscrossed with a network of fiber optic cables, carrying internet, TV, and telephone data that most of use every day. Over a two-day period, 33 individuals mostly from Southwest Virginia took part in the AWS Fiber Optic Fusion Splicing Certificate Course, a no-cost two-day training providing students with lectures and hands-on practice with fiber optic installation and repair. The course was held November 14-15 at Mountain Empire Community College (MECC), in Appalachia, Virginia, and in collaboration with MECC and the LENOWISCO Planning District Commission.

Cloud technology is transforming the way organizations use data to make decisions, provide services to communities, and collaborate across departments and business processes. However, some public sector organizations are challenged by procurement. In September 2022, the State of Arizona Department of Homeland Security (AZDOHS) launched a new program to bolster the cybersecurity of Arizona’s most vulnerable cities, counties, and K12 school districts. The Arizona Statewide Cyber Readiness Grant Program enables local entities to reduce their cyberattack surface by accessing technical assistance and software licenses across five functional areas. The Cyber Grant Task Force selected two software providers from the AWS Marketplace hosted on HAQM Web Services (AWS), Tanium and CrowdStrike to assist cities, counties, and schools with improving their cybersecurity posture.

To assist the science community in conducting studies of climate change impacts at local to regional scales, NASA created the NASA Earth Exchange (NEX) Global Daily Downscaled Projections (GDDP) dataset, or NEX-GDDP-CMIP6. This dataset is expected to enhance public understanding of possible future climate patterns at the spatial scale of individual towns, cities, and watersheds. It provides a set of global, high resolution, bias-corrected climate change projections that can be used to evaluate climate change impacts on processes that are sensitive to finer-scale climate gradients and the effects of local topography on climate conditions. As part of the HAQM Sustainability Data Initiative (ASDI), this dataset is available at no cost on the Registry of Open Data.
