As communities around the world grow, traffic congestion problems increase. The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) is currently migrating their systems to a cloud architecture. Mason McDaniel, chief technology officer at ATF, spoke with Government Matters at the AWS Public Sector Summit in Washington, DC about the status of their current cloud migration efforts. CDSM Interactive Solutions Ltd (CDSM), founded in 1998, is a multi-faceted EdTech company that provides bespoke e-learning services and Thinqi, a next generation learning management system (LMS), to the state education sector. We spent some time with two of CDSM’s more senior colleagues, Steve Finch, Head of Marketing, and Darren Wallace, Chief Technical Officer, both of whom have been with CDSM since the early 2000s.

Video is everywhere – from TV sets to mobile displays, digital billboards, and even classrooms. With consumers often glued to their digital devices, video has quickly become a preferred instructional tool for teachers and learning aid for students. Recognizing this trend, education and technology company Cengage incorporates video into almost all of its instructional and research materials, which are tapped by teachers and students in classrooms, as well as K12, public, and academic libraries across the world. Cengage’s Library and Research business unit, Gale, takes a similar approach with its educational materials.

Tasking someone to find a singular image in a sea of millions of captured images would be like telling them to find a needle in a haystack. Yet, this is one project for which Ralph Perko is developing a solution. Perko is a lead senior software engineer at the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) in the state of Washington. In his role, he is responsible for taking the lab’s research and creating applied, scalable solutions to support PNNL’s customers’ missions.

A Commonwealth of Virginia initiative is now expanding to meet the demand for cybersecurity education across the country. The Virginia Cyber Range will offer its cybersecurity education services to educators, industry, and others, through a new offering named the U.S. Cyber Range of Virginia Tech.

The Maryland Department of Human Services (DHS) is the state’s primary social service provider. Through 24 local social services agencies, the department assists people in economic need, provides preventive services, and protects vulnerable children and adults in each of Maryland’s 23 counties and the City of Baltimore.

The University of Nottingham has a history dating back to 1881, and while the university is now global with campuses in China and Malaysia, its flagship campus remains in the UK. Today, the university’s research efforts span nearly every discipline. One current project is Crossbow, a new, open source software project conceived and developed by Dr. Christian Suess, a research fellow at The University of Nottingham in conjunction with principal investigator Prof. Charlie Laughton, professor of computational pharmaceutical science. Crossbow is based out of the school of pharmacy at the University of Nottingham, where there is a particular interest in researching the design of new medicines using computer simulations of drugs and proteins.
