Accelerating innovation in Australia and New Zealand: AWS Summit Canberra keynote recap

On Wednesday, August 31, Max Peterson, vice president of worldwide public sector at AWS, delivered the keynote address at the AWS Summit Canberra. Max shared regional announcements and local stories of how public sector customers are using the cloud to transform citizen services, innovate in healthcare, improve sustainability, and more. Two customer speakers joined the stage to share how AWS helps their organizations support their mission success and reimagine what’s possible. What’d you miss at the AWS Summit Canberra keynote?

AWS announces the 10 startups selected for the 2022 AWS Healthcare Accelerator focused on health equity

AWS announced the 10 finalists for the 2022 AWS Healthcare Accelerator focused on improving health equity. This year’s cohort brought forward innovative ideas that will improve access to care, provide actionable health equity data, expand access to medical transport, and help people without a home reach housing and health goals. Over the course of the four-week Accelerator program, these 10 startups will receive technical and business mentorship from AWS and KidsX experts, up to $25,000 in AWS Computing Credits, and collaboration opportunities with AWS healthcare customers, industry leaders, and members of AWS Partner Network (APN) looking for healthcare solutions.

Building a resilient and scalable clinical genomics analysis pipeline with AWS

At the Baylor College of Medicine Human Genome Sequencing Center (BCM HGSC), we aim to advance precision medicine and research in genomics. In that effort, we joined the ambitious All of Us Research Program funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) to help deliver genomic data to over one million individuals across the United States. In early 2019, we estimated that processing whole genome samples for this megaproject would imply a scale-up of over four times the production workload of our center. We used AWS to support our new pipeline demands, which saved time, reduced costs, and created new opportunities for future development.

Advancing health equity with ET3 programs and AWS

eVisit’s role as a participant in the AWS Health Equity Initiative provided me with the opportunity to serve as a panelist at this year’s AWS Summit Washington, DC in May. I presented alongside other AWS health equity program partners to outline our collective efforts to increase access to healthcare services in underserved communities, reduce disparities by addressing social determinants of health (SDoH), and leverage data to promote equitable systems of care.

New research shows EU and UK healthcare sectors could save 14.4 billion euros with AWS

The AWS Cloud Economics Centre published a new analysis that identified 14.4 billion euros in potential information technology (IT) savings across the European Union and United Kingdom healthcare sectors over the next five years—the equivalent of 5,665 euros per hospital bed—through the digital transformation of IT systems by migrating to the cloud.

How KHUH built a long-term storage solution for medical image data with AWS

King Hamad University Hospital (KHUH) and Bahrain Oncology Center is a 600-bed-hospital in Bahrain. Over the years, KHUH faced constraints with exponential growth of their on-premise storage needs, particularly with the medical images stored by their picture archiving and communication system (PACS). KHUH turned to AWS to develop a cost- and time-effective long-term storage solution, without making changes to their existing PACS, that reduced storage costs by 40%.

Transforming radiology workflows with clinical decision support powered by AWS

The healthcare technology (HealthTech) startup contextflow uses AWS to power its clinical decision support system that can help radiologists diagnose patients faster and with more accuracy. The software can search, retrieve, and compare historical diagnostic data to help guide radiologists in writing reports. It is currently being utilized to analyze lung computed tomography (CT) scans for interstitial lung diseases (ILD), chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), and lung cancer screenings.

Getting started with healthcare data lakes: Using microservices

Data lakes can help hospitals and healthcare organizations turn data into insights and maintain business continuity, while preserving patient privacy. This blog post is part of a larger series about getting started with setting up a healthcare data lake. In this blog post, I detail how the solution has evolved at a foundational level over the series to include microservices. I describe the design decisions I’ve made and the additional features used. You can access code samples for this solution through a GitHub repo for reference.

AWS launches next AWS Healthcare Accelerator to propel startup innovation in health equity

At AWS, we believe the cloud can help address long-standing social and structural disparities that impact health outcomes. That’s why we have chosen to focus the next AWS Healthcare Accelerator on health equity. Launching today, this accelerator builds on our larger focus on this issue that includes a $40M commitment we made last September to support customers developing solutions to reduce health inequities. The AWS Healthcare Accelerator, delivered in collaboration with KidsX, aims to empower all startups that focus on improving health equity.
