Bridging the cloud skills gap: Inside UVA’s cyber bootcamp at AWS Skills Center Arlington

In an increasingly digital world, the demand for cloud computing and cybersecurity expertise continues to grow. To address this, the University of Virginia (UVA) and Commonwealth Cyber Initiative joined forces with AWS Skills Center Arlington to deliver an innovative Cyber & AWS Cloud Essentials Bootcamp. In this post, you’ll learn how this program prepared participants for tech careers through hands-on learning, industry connections, and AWS Certification preparation. You’ll also discover how similar opportunities are available to learners of all backgrounds at AWS Skills Centers, including free courses both in-person and online.

A new approach to cloud learning

Interactive exhibits in the Cloud Discovery Space show how the cloud enables real-world experiences.

UVA’s Cyber & AWS Cloud Essentials Bootcamp brought together a diverse group of students, primarily from computer science and engineering backgrounds, for an experience that went far beyond traditional classroom learning. What set this bootcamp apart was its comprehensive approach to learning. Students didn’t just sit through lectures—they explored interactive exhibits in the Cloud Discovery Space, participated in hands-on workshops, and engaged with real-world applications in robotics, space technology, machine learning, gaming, and smart homes.

“As an aspiring Software Engineer, I have heard of AWS Cloud being essential in this new era of technology,” shares Samriddhi Kumar, a second-year Computer Science major. “Learning about the AWS Cloud Practitioner Certification was a perfect gateway to expand my skill set.”

Building real-world connections

The program’s structure reflected the reality of today’s tech industry, where technical knowledge must be paired with practical experience and professional networking. The schedule included:

  • A tabletop cybersecurity exercise with Booz Allen Hamilton alumni
  • A generative AI workshop led by AWS developers
  • A targeted career fair with Virginia-based employers seeking cyber talent

“When speaking with various local companies during the mini career fair, I saw the variety of fields and jobs you can go into with knowledge of the AWS Cloud and cybersecurity,” reflects Pallavi Mamillapalli, another second-year Computer Science major. This exposure to practical applications and career opportunities proved invaluable for participants.

Creating a supportive learning community

One of the most striking aspects of the program was the strong sense of community it fostered. Michelle Monge, a fourth-year Electrical Engineering major, emphasized the collaborative atmosphere: “I enjoyed learning about how people, processes, and technology fit in different respects. It was incredibly refreshing working together as a team in such a supportive environment.”

The program attracted students across different years and majors, creating a diverse learning environment that mirrors the real-world tech industry. This diversity enhanced the learning experience, with participants sharing different perspectives and approaches to problem solving.

Expanding horizons

For many participants, the bootcamp opened their eyes to the vast possibilities in cloud computing. “It is so much more expansive and limitless than I thought!” exclaims Lilli Hrncir, a third-year double major in Computer Science and Japanese. The program successfully demonstrated how cloud skills can be applied across various industries and career paths.

Cherry Lin, a second-year Computer Science major, noted that the program was “a stellar opportunity for beginners and experienced students interested in technology, and those interested in topics beyond that because AWS is becoming increasingly versatile and relevant!”

The impact

The success of this UVA bootcamp demonstrates the effectiveness of the AWS Skills Center model in:

  • Providing hands-on, practical cloud computing experience
  • Creating networking opportunities with industry professionals
  • Building a supportive community of learners
  • Connecting students directly with potential employers
  • Preparing participants for industry-recognized certifications

Looking forward

As cloud computing continues to reshape industries worldwide, programs like this AWS Skills Center bootcamp, and other cohort-based experiences, play a crucial role in preparing the next generation of tech professionals. The combination of technical training, practical experience, and professional networking creates a powerful foundation for career success.
