  • Review verified by G2

What do you like best about the product?
Extremely large apt-get software repository
PPAs for almost every thing you need
Great long term stability releases when on LTS branch
Lots of online tutorials on common flows
Performance is great with modern kernels
What do you dislike about the product?
in-place upgrades for the non-lts branch always felt difficult and tricky
wish LTS support came with modern kernels more easily
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
All of our cloud servers and containers are running Ubuntu
Recommendations to others considering the product:
On the desktop, use ubuntuMate or xubuntu, on servers, definitely use the LTS release.

Ubuntu 16.04 LTS Review

  • July 07, 2017
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
Ubuntu 16.04 LTS version was easy to download and install. Used Rufus to setup a USB drive with this download and the it was a breeze to install my machine. I love the easy to use GNOME GUI though most of the time I'm logged into the terminal window. Love the freebie Office Libre - don't have to pay MSFT. Best of all it is stable as a rock. No reboot required in over a month now.
What do you dislike about the product?
Honestly, there is not much to not like. Occasionally, you might download a package that doesn't have all the package dependencies quite worked out which can cause unstability after that upgrade. But you should be fine if you stick to packages from reputed sources.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Used as development platform for embedded Linux.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
Can't beat Ubuntu if you need an open source free OS for Linux based development.

What do you like best about the product?
Quick to learn terminal commands, ease of use, open source, free software. Easy apt-get installations. Community based solutions.
What do you dislike about the product?
Repetitive warnings about something failed unexpectedly on opening up or closing down. wifi drivers disconnect on sleep. Not the best for code deployment as many of the software out there are windows driven
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Code development. Open source is the best benefit realized.

De facto hosting operating system

  • June 16, 2017
  • Review verified by G2

What do you like best about the product?
Ubuntu is rock solid as a hosting operating system. It has no licence fees. It is open source and actively developed. It has a substantial community. There is commercial support if you really need it.
What do you dislike about the product?
Ubuntu had a detour to try and support mobile phones and convergeance. They are back on track now.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
We use Ubuntu to host all our sites and solutions, across physical and virtualised servers.

Sharp Learning Curve, But Worthwhile

  • June 16, 2017
  • Review provided by G2

What do you like best about the product?
The fully customizable interface and lack of bloatware that both Windows and Mac OS suffer from.
What do you dislike about the product?
The lack of support from a decent amount of large software publishers means that you have to find substitutes for programs that you were comfortable with on other operating systems.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Ubuntu provides a safer digital work environment for people who have grown weary of being simultaneously hassled and nickel and dimed by Microsoft and Apple.

What do you like best about the product?
Ubuntu is free, open-source, and highly customizable, you have a very fine control of your parameters. Moreover, Ubuntu is light and can coexist with other Operating Softwares.
What do you dislike about the product?
If you don't know what you are doing you can break your system and lose data. Not compatible with lots of software available for other Operating Systems like OSX or Windows (including games).
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Ubuntu is my main Operating System at work, it has everything needed: text editors, console, browsers...
Recommendations to others considering the product:
Don't jump into it without some knowledge of how everything works. You can destroy all of your data in seconds because of an incorrect command.

    Computer Software

Excellent!

  • May 31, 2017
  • Review verified by G2

What do you like best about the product?
It is very easy for a computer science student like me to do all projects on Ubuntu. This is mainly because any installments required on Ubuntu (especially 14.04) is very easily guided by several blogs online. Also, "howtoubuntu.org" is very well documented and is usually very helpful.
What do you dislike about the product?
Ubuntu is quite satisfying for the kind of work I use it for.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
Various Computer Science Projects - Web Development, Computer Networks, Machine Learning, Image Processing, etc. The benefits mainly are that Ubuntu 14.04 is very popular and hence, almost all queries related to it are resolved very easily via online documentations.

    Internet

An essential operating system.

What do you like best about the product?
Ubuntu is very lightweight. Installation of softwares using Sofware management Center is very user friendly.
What do you dislike about the product?
There is no "Format" option in the right click of the USB drives. A "Format" feature is essential for lots and lots of people.
What problems is the product solving and how is that benefiting you?
I use it as my daily operating system. I also use it for hosting my websites. It is very straightforward to setup nginx, etc. and it makes a lot of sense to keep the operating system footprint small when hosting websites.
Recommendations to others considering the product:
Don't be limited to the way Windows or MacOS works. Think of what you have to get done, and then look at how that gets done in Ubuntu. Don't be limited to the way you accomplish the same thing in Windows or MacOS. You will get the hang of it sooner than you realise, and you will be surprised by the ease of use.
